What is Bio-augmentation?

 

"Increasing the activity of bacteria that break down pollutants, a technique used in bioremediation."

Two of the most common types of Biological treatment systems are once-through aerated lagoon systems  and the activated sludge systems.

Not all systems require bacterial enhancements. Some, however, have either high or low Food to mass ratios, which have their own set of unique problems. In these cases  the stream must be manipulated to developed the correct sludge aging and desired removal efficiency. Other parameters to check are the BOD₅:(N:NH₄⁺):(P:PO₄^3-) and the COD:(N:NH₄⁺):(P:PO₄^3-).
